Notification of Intent to Homeschool
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is responsible for ensuring that all children subject to compulsory education laws – children between the ages of five and seventeen who reside in the District of Columbia – receive an education. Homeschooling is a private, parent/legal guardian-directed education program for children who are subject to compulsory education. Eligible parents/legal guardians may choose to begin a homeschooling program at any point during the school year and must notify OSSE if choosing to homeschool at least 15 business days prior to the first date of home instruction. OSSE also requires parents/legal guardians to submit notification of their intent to continue homeschooling for the upcoming school year by annual resubmission of this form no later than Aug. 15.
Parents/legal guardians who wish to provide home instruction to their children must have a high school diploma or its equivalent or request a waiver from this requirement. This documentation must be uploaded within this system at the time of notification or by email within seven business days of submitting an intent to provide home instruction to OSSE.Homeschool@dc.gov. To notify OSSE of your intent to start or continue homeschooling, please continue below.
