Capital Bikeshare Launches Bank on DC Partnership
Program Will Offer Membership Discount to Individuals who Sign up for Debit or Credit Card
(Washington, D.C.) Today, Capital Bikeshare, in conjunction with Bank on DC, United Bank and the District Government Employees Federal Credit Union (DGEFCU), announced the launch of its Bank on DC program, which will offer $50 annual memberships to unbanked individuals who sign up for a debit or credit account at United Bank or DGEFCU. In addition, existing Bank on DC members will also be offered the $50 annual membership rate.
Currently an annual or casual member must have a credit or debit card to use Capital Bikeshare’s 1,100 bikes at more than 130 stations. The Bank on DC program will allow Capital Bikeshare to better reach members of underserved communities, and give them a $25 deduction from the regular fee for an annual membership.
Bank on DC targets those unbanked and underbanked residents who would otherwise use non-traditional means of savings and finance. Residents eligible for a Bank on DC account have either never had a checking or savings account, have ChexSystem history, or do not have direct deposit.
The partnership was conceived to promote a healthy and environmentally-friendly form of transit, along with the benefits of financial stability and security.
“Capital Bikeshare has been a tremendous success,” said Terry Bellamy, Director of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). “The launch of the Bank on DC partnership reflects our commitment to spreading this transit system’s convenience, accessibility and affordability to all of our neighborhoods, communities and residents.”
“The expansion of access of Capital Bikeshare in this meaningful way will provide our residents another opportunity to take advantage of this wonderful transit option,” said Victor L. Hoskins, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED). “Additionally, we applaud United Bank and DGEFCU for their continued efforts in helping residents eliminate the barriers to achieving their financial goals. “
Signing up for a Capital Bikeshare membership in the Bank on DC program is easy and convenient. Individuals simply need to speak with a representative at any United Bank or DGEFCU location to open up their new debit or credit account and will then receive a $25 gift certificate good towards the cost of an annual Capital Bikeshare membership. You can either sign up online at capitalbikeshare.com/signup and enter your code in the “Reedem a Gift Certificate” box or call Capital Bikeshare at 1-877-430-2453 and provide your gift certificate number to a customer service representative. Individuals will then be mailed an annual membership key.

Capital Bikeshare is the product of a unique public/private partnership between DDOT, Arlington County and Alta Bike Share. The two jurisdictions worked closely with Alta Bicycle Share to develop the program in the fall of 2010, offering the first regional bikesharing service in the nation. Based on the initial success of the program, both jurisdictions are now adding additional stations and bicycles and the city of Alexandria is expected to launch a pilot program in 2012.
